Large Bindweed (Common Name)
Calystegia sepium subsp. Roseata (Scientific Name) A perennial herb (October - March) strong though not rampant climber and interwoven creeper, with green to burgundy stems, and heart shaped leaves, which may or may not have a burgundy edge, the leaves are up to 100mm long and 70mm wide. The upper leaf surface is a matt, green to dark green and hairless; lower leaf is of same colour and hairless. It is usually found along the margins of wet areas. Single funnel-shaped white flowers tinged with pink up to 60mm long, on stalks longer than leaf stalks,opening during the day, but closed at night. Nb. often mistaken for a weed as it looks like the garden variety Greater bindweed (Calystegia silvatica). |
