Mat Grass (Common Name)
Hemarthria uncinata var. uncinata (Scientific Name) From Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust © The State of New South Wales Distribution and habitat Grows in swamps or damp places found in, NSW. Qld. Vic. Tas. W.A. S.A. Description Creeping perennial, sometimes forming mats to 1 m high in damp areas. Leaves with sheath mostly glabrous; ligule a ciliate rim; blade to 5 mm wide. Leaf sheaths closely encircling the stem; pedicellate spikelets usually 5–7 mm long. Leaf sheaths closely encircling the stem; pedicellate spikelets usually 5–7 mm long. Raceme 6–14 cm long, often slightly curved, axillary racemes may form at lower nodes, spikelets falling with rachis internodes. Sessile spikelets 6–10 mm long. Lower glume tapering into a very variable point, acute, acuminate or hooked, faintly 5–7-nerved; upper ± fused to rachis. Lower lemma 2-nerved, sterile, without a palea; upper nerveless, with a small nerveless palea. Pedicellate spikelets 5–10 mm long, often slightly longer and more acuminate than the sessile spikelets. Lower glume similar to that of the sessile spikelet with a straight or hooked apex; upper asymmetric, narrowly winged. |

Blady Grass (Common Name)
Imperata cylindrica (Scientific Name) From Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust © The State of New South Wales Distribution and habitat found in, NSW. Qld. Vic. Tas. W.A. S.A. Description Rhizomatous perennial producing tufts to 1.2 m high; rhizomes elongate, branched, tough, scaly, sometimes with tuber-like swellings on the lower roots. Leaves with sheath glabrous or hairy, breaking-up into fibres that are persistent around the base of the plant; ligule 0.5–1 mm long; blade 2–20 mm wide, flat, glabrous, tough, with an obvious lighter-coloured midrib. Panicle to 25 cm long, dense when young, white dotted with brown stigmas and anthers at anthesis. Spikelets mostly 3–4 mm long, enveloped by hairs 9–15 mm long. Glumes 3–7-nerved. Lower lemma 1.5–4 mm long, sterile, hairy; upper 1–3 mm long, hairy, with a palea 0.8–2 mm long. Stamens 2; anthers 2–4 mm long. Caryopsis 1–1.3 mm long. |

Common Blown-grass (Common Name)
Lachnagrostis filiformis var? (Scientific Name) From Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust © The State of New South Wales Distribution and habitat Often grows on heavy soils or in moist areas; widespread found in, NSW. Qld. Vic. Tas. W.A. S.A. Description Very variable, erect or somewhat geniculate annual or perennial to 0.7 m high; culms terete, somewhat compressed, very slender to moderately stout, c. 4-noded. Leaves with sheath often becoming rather loose from the culm in the upper part; ligule obtuse, 3–8 mm long; blade shallowly grooved, 1–3.5 mm wide. Panicle divaricately spreading at maturity in well developed specimens, the lower part enclosed by the uppermost sheath when young, to 30 cm long, disarticulating at maturity. Spikelets rather numerous towards the ends of the branches, laterally compressed, usually 2–4 mm long, greenish or straw-coloured, sometimes tinged with purple. Glumes acute or acuminate, rather narrow. Lemma truncate and very shortly and equally 4-toothed at the apex, 1.3–2 mm long; awn exserted, usually fine, geniculate. Palea very thin, membranous, minutely 2-fid. |
